Russian Assassin Guns down Athletico Madrid

The Men in Red & White are back. Arsenal started the month of August with a nice 2-1 win over Athletico Madrid in the 2nd game of the Emirates Cup yesterday. Not one of the best/entertaining games but it can be reasoned that it was just a pre-season game with the players lacking the usual motivation. Still there were couple of players from each side who would have wanted to prove their worth again. Tomas Rosicky and Emanuel Eboue from Arsenal and Reyes and Diego Forlan from Athletico Madrid.

As expected all the attention was on Rosicky who was playing at home for the first time since over a year and he was out there to impress. The little Mozart  would have had a dream comeback like Eduardo   only for the goal to be ruled off-side by the referee. I think he had a decent first half and will only get better as he gets more and more games. Of course like Wenger suggested in the post game interview that he is still cautious and would judge him[Tomas] only after a month and a half. Like always Arsenal created a number of chances but failed to convert them. Eboue,Nik B and RVP all coming close to scoring and the first half ended at 0-0.The second half saw Wenger make a few changes with Arshavin, Fabregas and Wilshere coming on. Arshavin did manage to score five minutes from time but Arsenal seemed to repeat the mistakes of last season with Athletico Madrid leveling within 2 minutes. It all looked to end 1-1 before Arshavin repeated his magic and showed why he is one of the best players at the moment. Arsenal scoring a 90th minute goal to clinch victory and go top of the table in the Emirates Cup.

A brace from the Russian Assassin saving the day then. There’s still work to be done by the team and with Wenger likely to bring in 1-2 new faces ( or old ) it does make for an interesting season to look forward to. I said before the game to one of my friends that if Arsenal manage to keep a clean sheet against the likes of Forlan,Aguero and Reyes then our defence isn’t all that bad. Well we didn’t manage a clean sheet but I think the defence did considerably well and I am sure will improve once the season starts. So it’s a happy ending and if we beat Rangers tomorrow we are sure of some silverware. I hope it’s not the last one this season.

Now for the usual HERO & ZERO of the game…

HERO of THE GAME: Jack Wilshere . ( Sorry Arshavin, but Jack is just 17, played superbly and deserved it)

ZERO of THE GAME: Denilson.

SPECIAL MENTION: Tomas Rosicky. Stay fit and you will do wonders.

P.S: There will be a more detailed and comprehensive match report for the games once the season starts. Like the players I also lack the motivation in pre-season games.
